Fast Rants and Slow Traffic

Today started out very well. We wound up staying in a hotel room in Sturbridge last night, which was actually really nice. We were on our own, Jacob went to sleep easily, and we spent a very nice quiet night together. In the morning, Jacob was in a fabulous mood and had lots of fun exploring the hotel room.

However.
We hereby declare “The New Jersey” to be the new standard of traffic suckiness. Mind you, the phenomenon starts in New York, but it definitely matures to perfection in New Jersey. In the beginning, Jacob slept through it:

We are eternally grateful for this. But there are only so many hours of “gogogofastfastfastwaitSTOPSTOPSTOP” driving one can do before it starts to disturb the baby.

Most of the afternoon, the view outside our car windows looked like this.

(We found the constantly illuminated “Reduce Speed” signs in stand-still traffic particularly funny.) Eventually, things lightened up a bit, at least for 2 minutes until the freak thunderstorm hit.

So. A “1 New Jersey” afternoon of driving, today. On the bright side, once we got into Piscataway the sun came out, the baby started smiling, and we were all thrilled to get to the Hellers’ house.

(Jacob just before getting out of the car, playing the piano with Craig, playing with “Lucky” the “dog”, and playing peek-a-boo with Aunt Jean. Piscataway hereby goes on record as Jacob’s favorite place in the world.)
Tomorrow’s driving includes more Jersey Turnpike, Baltimore, Washington DC, and Richmond on our way to Williamsburg. Hope springs eternal, of course, but I think we’re probably looking at a 1 New Jersey day, at least.
